Review: BE Wanderlust. . . Desert Collection

by Jen on April 13, 2012

I got my preview goodies at the boutique yesterday, and much as I love the new READY duos and quads I got yesterday, I just had to start with this kit. The Wanderlust. . . Desert Collection ($49) is a boutique-exclusive kit that launches officially in May, but if you work fast you can get it during the preview event that ends today. The kit includes the following:

  • Prime Time Primer Shadow in Gold Nugget
  • Heatwave Eyecolor
  • Round the Clock Waterproof Eyeliner in Midnight
  • Canyon Blush/Citrine Radiance AOFC Duo
  • 100% Natural Lipgloss in Angel Food Cake
  • Flawless Definition Curl & Lengthen Mascara in Black
  • Travel Bag

I normally don’t spend a lot of time on packaging and inserts, but BE really hit it out of the park this time. The kit comes in a sturdy cardboard box with a carry handle, almost like a grown-up Happy Meal. And the goodies inside couldn’t possibly be any better. The insert is super-cool too, a foldout reminiscent of a travel brochure. It has three panels, and the top one is a postcard that you can tear off and send to a friend–too cute! There’s a large face chart on the middle panel (instructions are on the back), plus the usual message from Leslie.

Some of you may be familiar with the Prime Time Primer Shadow in Gold Nugget; it was included in the Strike it Rich set of minis last Christmas. If you lay it on thick, it’s an intense shiny gold, but if you use ┬ájust a little, it blends out to a lovely golden sheen that isn’t too intense, and is wearable on even the palest, coolest complexions. It wears like iron and really does make your eyeshadows last all day.

The new Heatwave Eyecolor is shimmering copper brown that can be blended out for a sheer wash of color or layered on for a deeper copper brown. It’s a really pretty shade with some gold and iridescent sparkle. The Round the Clock Waterproof Eyeliner in Midnight is nice, though I would have liked to see a strong dark brown instead to go with all of the other colors. The Flawless Definition Curl & Lengthen Mascara is one of my current favorites from BE and does help to curl my annoyingly stick-straight lashes somewhat.

The Citrine Radiance/Canyon Blush Duo is in a double-sided jar exactly like the blush compatibles and Double Dewy AOFCs that were released a few years ago. Citrine Radiance is a great highlighter and could also be used as an eyeshadow. It may be hard to see in the swatch photos, but it is particularly versatile. Canyon blush is very orange (in a good way!) and is right on trend with the color of the season (highlighted in Sephora’s Pantone Tangerine collection).

It’s the one part of the kit that I’ll have a little trouble using, since I’m very cool-toned and don’t really wear blush all that much, but the great thing about loose minerals is that they’re very easy to mix and you can use them anywhere on your face. Try dipping your lip balm in the blush, or using it as an unusual eyecolor.

The 100% Natural Lipgloss in Angel Food Cake is the perfect addition to this kit, since it’s fairly neutral and doesn’t impart a lot of color to the lips. Since the eye look is stronger in this collection, it’s nice to see a coordinating gloss that isn’t too overpowering–though some will be disappointed since this isn’t a new color.

The Travel Bag that comes with the set is a good size, roughly six inches long, three and a half inches tall, and about two inches deep. The exterior is fully clear plastic over a khaki brown fabric with a yellow hearts and swirls design and yellow piping along the seams. The yellow zipper is sturdy and works well, with a metal Bare Escentuals pull. The bag opens wide enough that you can get to your goodies easily, and with the yellow lining that matches the piping on the exterior of the bag you can see everything easily too.

If you have a warm complexion, and/or like warm, bronze-y tones, you need to buy this kit right now–it’s simply fantastic. All of the colors are so beautifully coordinated, and while I think that BE always does a good job with creating coherent looks, this one is particularly impressive. Get it now, during the April preview, and you’ll feel like summer is already here.

Otherwise you can wait until the boutique-exclusive kit officially launches this May. . . but who wants to wait for a great thing? Even if the eyeliner, gloss, and mascara aren’t brand new colors, the other parts of this kit are well worth the price of admission on their own.
