Sneak Peek Review and Photos: It Cosmetics Complexion Perfection TSV

by Jen on January 10, 2012

It Cosmetics is offering the company’s first TSV on QVC this Friday the 13th. You might think the date is a bad omen, except for the fact that you don’t have to be superstitious about anything from this major new player on the beauty scene. The It Cosmetics product line is still relatively small, but everything I’ve tried so far has been outstanding, and this TSV is filled with some of the company’s already iconic products.

I was thrilled when a company PR rep contact me and offered to send out a TSV preview kit, but when I didn’t hear back from her for more than a week I went ahead and ordered my own kit, which was available from QVC early thanks to the Insider program. Of course you already know what happened next–both kits arrived on the same day! Murphy’s law turned out to be a good thing in this case, because I ordered the Light kit to match my skin tone and the company sent the Medium kit, so I can provide even better color swatches for you–just check out the photos below.

The Complexion Perfection four piece kit includes the following:

  • Deluxe Bye Bye Pores HD Finishing Powder
  • Bye Bye Under Eye Concealer in your choice of Light, Medium, Tan, or Deep
  • Heavenly Luxe Brush
  • Dual Ended Concealer/Foundation Brush
  • Brow Power Universal Brow Pencil (surprise bonus!)

The kit is a fantastic value at the TSV price of $49.98, especially when you add up the regular retail costs for each item–the Heavenly Luxe Brush normally sells for $48 on its own. The Bye Bye Pores HD Finishing Powder is just over three times the amount you get in the regular size jar, which sells for $24. The brow pencil is a $24 value, and you could certainly consider it a gift with purchase since it’s not even listed as being part of the kit. Of course the value isn’t important if the products don’t work, but in this case they do, and they actually work wonders, at least for this rosacea-afflicted gal.

I’m extremely self-conscious about my red cheeks–they’re really all I see when I look in the mirror. Even though I have a relatively mild case compared to some, and I’m careful to avoid triggers like extreme heat, I still flush easily and am red a great deal of the time. When I first tried Bye Bye Under Eye I was amazed at how well it works to cover up the redness on my cheeks. I don’t use it every single day, but when I need the extra coverage, it works beautifully under my bareMinerals foundation. It’s a little thicker than Mally’s conditioning concealer, and a little thinner than both Laura Geller Real Deal and Smashbox Second Skin concealer. (Yes, I do tend to try just about every concealer I can get my hands on, in the constant search for the product that hides every flaw perfectly.)

The best part about Bye Bye Under Eye for me is that it lasts all day (it’s waterproof!), so even on my worst days, I can face the world confidently. I usually apply it with my finger and do most of the smoothing out before reaching for the brush to finish the blending process and perfect the coverage. It’s easy to work with, which is also really important to me. I don’t want to spend ten minutes trying to blend a heavy, tacky concealer that otherwise calls more attention to my flaws instead of hiding them from view.

Color is more of an issue, and I suspect that some folks will have a hard time trying to decide which concealer shade to order. The company doesn’t offer a fair choice, which is why I selected the Light kit when I placed my order. I am extremely pale, except for my red cheeks, and wear bareMinerals Fair foundation every day. The It Cosmetics Light is a good choice for me most of the time, though I can tell that in the summer, when I get just the tiniest amount of color, I would need to mix in just a hint of the Medium color to get the perfect match. The medium color is truly neutral, and it will work well for folks with warm or cool undertones. The company says that 70% of the population is a medium, so it’s only the folks on the fairer and darker ends of the spectrum that might have some issues choosing their color match.

The Bye Bye Pores HD Finishing Powder is a nice product, and one I enjoy using, but it doesn’t give me that same “OMG” thrill factor that I get from the concealer. It’s a translucent powder and very light in texture, and a little goes a very long way so don’t overdo it or your complexion will look more powdery than flawless. It does help to control my oily nose and diffuse the pores and other blemishes on my face, but not in an incredibly more effective way than some of the other powders I’ve used, such as Mally’s Poreless Perfection Skin Finisher or even my old standby favorite, Bare Escentuals Mineral Veil.

The brushes are simply fantastic, and just about worth the price of admission. The Luxe brush is indeed luxe–very plush and full, extremely soft, and perfect for use with the Bye Bye Pores powder. The other brush is double-ended, with larger and smaller heads so that you can conceal larger areas or the tiniest blemish with ease. The quality on both is excellent; you won’t find any wobbly brush heads or tons of shedding hair on these brushes.

I was already a big fan of the Brow Power Universal Brow Pencil, and at first I thought that the one included with the kit was a deluxe sample size. It’s shorter than the regular pencil, but when you compare the net weights you see that they’re identical for both products. Perhaps they were able to take advantage of some upgraded packaging, but however it happened you still get the same amount of product in an even more portable pencil. It still has the spoolie brush on one end and the oval shaped pencil in the other, witch caps for both so you can travel in confidence. Brow Power creates the most realistic brows and is universal for all hair colors–just press a little harder to deposit more color if you’re a brunette or have black hair.

It’s hard not to gush about this TSV, and I’m not saying that just because the company provided a review sample kit–I also bought my own before I ever knew that I was getting a sample kit, and they just happened to arrive on the same day. I simply adore the Bye Bye Under Eyes concealer, the brushes are fabulous, and I can’t believe the under $50 kit came with a bonus Brow Power pencil that is worth $24 by itself.

The only true negative I could find is that there are no instructions included with the kit as a whole or with any of the products. Though there’s nothing terribly complicated here, it was somewhat disappointing to find nothing more than a product catalog in the box that illustrates all of the It Cosmetics products currently available for purchase from QVC.

I highly recommend the Complexion Perfection kit from It Cosmetics. It truly is universal, for all skin tones, and includes some amazing products. If you have blemishes or other skin imperfections to hide, you need to try Bye Bye Under Eye, and don’t let the name fool you–it works on anything you need to cover, not just the dark circles in your under eye area. And the finishing powder does a good job of blurring the lines and providing a soft focus lighting effect for my face.

You can get one kit, or sign up for autodelivery to get two more kits in total over the next several months. There is no word yet on whether future shipments will include the same exact kit or come with different products. I suspect that they will remain the same, based on the basic universality of the components and the value proposition; an eyeshadow brush would have a very hard time competing against the Luxe brush. I have contacted the company and am waiting for confirmation either way, though I would be happy to be proven wrong, and end up with an entire set of It Cosmetics brushes.

Thankfully there’s not much time to wait for the TSV on QVC–the Complexion Perfection kit will be available on Friday, January 13th for one day only at the special price of $49.98, autodelivery optional. Go ahead and try it. You’ve got nothing to lose, thanks to QVC’s thirty day return policy, but I suspect that’s one QVC perk you won’t have to take advantage of. Once, you try It Cosmetics, you’ll probably be hooked.
